My family and I dined at Pacificana Chinese Restaurant, located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. My relatives and I usually attend this restaurant every year and I think their food is overrated. The setting is nice- very lavish inside and a pleasant environment. The food looks great but tastes average. The lamb was overcooked, bok choy was bland, and the chicken was too salty. My favorite dish would have to be the lobster. I wouldn’t come here unless I was forced to. Maybe they’re most known for their dim sum which I have yet to try.

My mom and sister made this apple pie; adapted from Grandma Ople’s Apple Pie recipe from allrecipes.com. It turned out surprisingly good. We made two pies altogether- one for our family and one for our relatives for Christmas. This recipe is for one 9 inch pie.

Before making the actual pie, prepare the crust first.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Directions

  1. Mix shortening, flour, and salt together with a fork or a pastry blender until very crumbly. Add as much water as needed to hold together, and mix lightly with a fork.
  2. Roll gently on a floured pastry cloth to about an inch larger than pie plate. Fold carefully in half, lift to pie plate, and unfold. Press into pan. For a single-crust pie, trim with a small knife to about 1/2 inch beyond rim. Fold up, and pinch so edge of pie is raised from rim.

After you are done making the crust, it is time to make the actual pie.

Ingredients

  • 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 8 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced

Directions

  1. Melt butter in a sauce pan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add white sugar, brown sugar and water; bring to a boil. Reduce temperature, and simmer 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
  3. Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.

What we could’ve done was make the lattice a bit thinner because it was too thick.

This was a very interesting treat given to me from my sister’s friend. It is a specialty treat from a candy shop in Rome, N.Y. They are called Turkey Joints and each piece is shaped like an actual bone. The silver coating is made of sugar and the inside is filled with chocolate and Brazil nuts. Quite sweet, but tasty. 🙂

John and I have traveled to Mitsuwa just to get some baked goods and we both can never get enough of them. Each of these treats cost about $2.00 and they make it right in front of you so it is fresh. We chose one with red bean paste and egg cream filling for the other.

We had some awesome pasta and pizza at this wonderful takeout/restaurant called Franco’s Metro. All the food is made to order, especially the personal brick oven pizzas. We liked Franco’s Metro so much that we had it two weekends in a row. The 1st weekend we ordered the Margherita Pizza with the Spaghetti with Matrigiana sauce. The Matrigiana sauce was a basic tomato based sauce infused with onions. The 2nd weekend we ordered the Spinach Ricotta Pizza with the Pesto Linguine.

The pizza was incredibly good the crust bordering on crispy and chewy. The pasta was also good with the pesto being a little better than the tomato based sauce in my opinion. The meatballs were bready and very soft. This place is highly recommended.

Cinco De Mayo part 2. The first time I went with my friend we had some seafood paella, which was mighty tasty. This time I went with Cindy. We ordered some standard Mexican food which was the Arroz con Pollo and the Chicken Enchiladas. Arroz con Pollo literally translates into chicken with rice. It is basically a Mexican version of chicken fried rice with bits of chorizo. I cannot get enough of this dish which was originally recommended by my friend. Cindy got the chicken enchiladas with a side of refried beans and rice. Both dishes were delicious and highly recommended.

Cindy and I went to MukEunJi which is a Korean restaurant on Broad Avenue at Palisades Park, NJ. I have eaten there before with my parents and thought it was one of the better Korean food places among the multitudes of other Korean restaurants. We ordered the Dakdoritang which is a spicy chicken soup with potatoes, kimchi, and other various vegetables. The broth was very thick and was very enriching and fulfilling. The chicken was also cooked to perfection.

As complimentary side dishes my favorite was the mussels in broth and the ddukboki. Ddukboki is a spicy rice cake dish with fish cake cooked in a pepper paste sauce. The prices were good and so was the food.

I cannot believe that I turned 24 this past weekend. Where did all these years ago?

John took me out to eat at Mantra, an Indian restaurant located in Paramus, New Jersey. Food was great!! We started off with the shrimp appetizer and samosas (fried pastry shell which consists of various fillings such as potatoes, onions, peas, meat, etc). John ordered the spicy lamb (the most spicy dish on the menu) while I ordered the tandoori mixed grill (chicken, lamb, sausage, and shrimp). Tandoori is definitely a taste that I am not used to. Very exotic to me!

Then John surprised me with a small cake with assorted fruits, from Tous Les Jours, a Korean bakery. They tasted exactly the same as Chinese birthday cakes- very spongy with soft frosting. What’s great about these cakes is that the frosting is not as sweet as American cakes. It’s very fluffy like whipped cream. Thanks John! 🙂

The next day, my parents wanted to take me out to eat for my birthday. So we decided to go to Dai Wah Yummy City, located in Brooklyn. We ordered: mixed vegetables with chicken, lobster, sizzling chicken, bok choy, and fried fish with string beans. This is also a great Chinese restaurant. And their lobster wasn’t scrawny at all.

Got to eat lots and felt extremely gluttonous over the weekend. 🙂
